I enjoy reading erotica of all kinds but I have a special place in my heart (or vag) for stories of dominance, whether it be male or female. This book, as you can guess from the title and the picture on the cover is about male dominance. He’s On Top is a collection of stories about dominant males who are also kind of sweet and romantic, which seems a bit contradictory when thinking of the stereotype. The editor, Rachel Kramer Bussell, tells you right in the introduction that her story choices were meant to be at odds with the stereotype of the dom and she definitely accomplished that while still providing some sexy domination.
The book itself is a glossy paperback with 178 pages including the about the author and editor sections. There are seventeen different authors in the collection with a good amount being female authors. The characters range from first time encounters to long time lovers or new discoveries in long time relationships. The cover of the book is not at all discreet, so you will want to take care if you are reading it in public.
Now onto my favorite stories from the book:
Confession by Gwen Masters- This story is about a couple who has been married for twenty years and Clarice (wife) thinks that she may no longer lover her husband. They still make love but she hasn’t orgasmed in a year and just feels numb to him. She consults her local priest who tells her she should talk to her husband about her feelings. She finally does and he surprises her with some news of his own which leads to a hot and rough sex session.
The Sun is an Ordinary Star by Shanna Germain- This was probably my favorite and was far from the kinkiest/dommest story in the collection. This is also about a couple, but they are having problems for a different reason. Stella has cancer and has been going through treatment. Her husband is cleaning the house before he goes to bring her home from the hospital after a surgery and finds her favorite nipple clamps which leads to some reminiscing about their uses. Lately, Stella has been in too much pain for the kind of play the clamps entail so their love making has been soft and sweet. He picks her up from the hospital and she wants him but he’s still afraid to love her the way they used to. She finally communicates to him what she wants, needs, and they finally are able to love each other the way they want.
Schoolgirl and Angel by Thomas Roche- Daddy is at a kink club with Angel, his girlfriend and sub when he notices Schoolgirl watching him. She’s new to the club and has been wandering around all night declining invitations to play. Angel sees her watching and senses that she wants to play so she has Daddy let her down so that he can invite her. Daddy is kind of shy but eventually talks to Schoolgirl who ends up eagerly climbing onto the cross. They have a very sexy session in which Angel watches and enjoys from the sideline before jumping in and applying a condom for Daddy to fuck Schoolgirl. The three end up leaving the club together happily for further fun.
The three stories I picked as the ones I like most all have a couple theme, though that was unintentional. I also enjoyed some of the first time encounter stories like In Control where the characters met in a chat room and ended up meeting in real life for some (hot) play. There’s a good mix of styles in the stories, some characterizing the women as Type A and in control who love to be brought to submission while others seem quite and demure all along. A wonderful read that can be enjoyed fast or slow.
